The May 2021 edition of Fission's monthly Demo Day featured our announcement of joining the Decentralized Identity Foundation and our DID interop plans, our updated VS Code plugin, a demo of our Account Backup approach, and lots of TiddlyWiki-related news and demos.
Joining the Decentralized Identity Foundation
Fission is now an Associate Member of the Decentralized Identity Foundation.
Fission accounts have always been designed with portability in mind, being based on Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) from the very beginning.
We're working with the Secure Data Storage / Personal Data Store Working group, along with a number of other groups from the identity and IPFS ecosystems. Our Web Native File System is live today as a user-owned personal data store, so this is a great opportunity to see how we can come to a set of standards and specifications that work for everyone.
We also announced that we'll be working on DID interoperability. Our goal will be to accept DIDs from other systems, so that you can bring your own identity and make use of Fission's app publishing platform, personal data store, and other features.
We will be adding DID support to the Fission server, and targeting the Microsoft ION network as our first interoperability target.
We're talking to other people in the DID ecosystem and would love to showcase other examples of interoperability. If you're a developer building DID-based solutions, get in touch!
TiddlyWiki Demo with Jeremy Ruston
Jeremy Ruston, creator of TiddlyWiki, joined us to give an update on TiddlyWiki on Fission, as well as some really great new work on converting ePub books into annotatable TiddlyWiki content.
Funding TiddlyWiki Core Image Uploads with OpenCollective
Also announced was the fact that Boris is personally funding a core plugin to make it much easier to upload images, files and assets as separate files in TiddlyWiki.
The first backend supported will be uploading to Fission's Webnative File System on IPFS. Other backends and features will be prioritized by contributors.
Since Demo Day last week, Saq Imtiaz has agreed to do the TiddlyWiki core development to make this happen. You can find a full write up on the plan in the Fission forum, including some background from Saq.

VSCode Fission Plug-in
Brian took on updating the VS Code Fission plugin with our latest CLI updates and improvements. You can easily register and publish apps directly from within VSCode.
You can find it in the VSCode marketplace, and the source code is on Github https://github.com/fission-suite/fission-vscode
He also managed to sneak in a demo of CLI linking as well, showing how you can now link your Fission account to your developer machine as well as to web browsers.
Fission Account Backup WIP Demo
Philipp showed off his work-in-progress on the Dashboard around Account Backup. Fission accounts are based on public/private keys, and Fission doesn't keep a copy. This means that if you lose all of your devices, no one can get at your encrypted files.
Fission's account backup strategy is to give users a key fragment that you can use for recovery, without ever having access or control over your private files, similar to other secure, privacy-preserving systems.

The end of the demo day had some extended content, with more Fission + TiddlyWiki demos of Boris' personal usage of the system:

Drift: Boris keeps his working version of this TiddlyWiki in the encrypted, private version of his Fission webnative account. It has plugins that include Daily Notes, backlinks, autocomplete, and more, perfect for #ToolsForThought style note taking. Original version by akhater.
